The serenity boat

You’ve probably gathered by now I am all about the journey. Whether as the personal journey towards self awareness or the physical journey to an eventual destination. Sometimes this philosophy can be a difficult one to practice and I have to remind myself of my mantra “journey, process, journey, process…” You get the idea.

Most recently I have been reflecting on Serenity. I even like the word. Serene, serenity. The word sounds peaceful. A bit like a gentle stream running quietly through crisp fresh snow. Serenity.

O.k., enough of the visualization. I’ve been thinking how our serenity balance can be tipped unexpectedly, sometimes on a moment to moment basis. At other times our serenity balance can be in its serene mode and nothing can cause a ripple to its surface.

It’s bad enough when those we interact with disturb the serenity in our world. Granted once we’re in the zone it usually takes some pretty radical disturbing to shove us out of the zone. Unfortunately, more often than not it is we who upset our own serenity balance.

Perception is everything. I’ve always believed this to be the case. If we perceive something in a particular way, then this is our reality. Following this reasoning, and I am, our serenity and its balance seems to come back to how we and those we care about communicate. No wonder remaining serene can be such a challenge!

I then move to, for those of us who have achieved a fairly constant serenity level, the only people who can truly rock our serenity boat are those about whom we care deeply. When they, or we, interact in a less than effective manner, poof! the serenity balance is at risk. This brings me back to serenity is a journey.
