Sweep Against Child Prostitution

The weather is not in summer mode! I’ve tried gardening, but somehow gardening in the fog and drizzle isn’t as much fun as in the sunshine.

So, I’ve been spending time on the computer, visiting sites and making comments on subjects of interest. I found an interesting post on Sex in the Public Square. Elizabeth Wood was commenting on a recent New York Times article whose subject matter was “saving” 21 teens from sex work. I liked her post and had to add my own thoughts.

A response to the same New York Times article from Claudine O’Leary prompted me to visit her site, Rethink Resources: rethink your ideas about youth in the sex trade. When I arrived at Rethink Resources I found another article I needed to comment upon and this led to some dialogue between Claudine and me.

I continue to wonder about the dollars used in this “sweep”. I am glad 21 children were “saved”, perhaps if the money for the “sweep” had been utilized for programs and services to meet the needs of at risk youth then the children might not have been in a position to need saving.

389 adults charged. Does this figure make sense to you? It doesn’t to me. Sounds like a lot of media marketing.
