Summer joys

I am looking forward to the relaxed way of living I associate with the summer. I am not sure which pleasure I anticipate most, whether it will be the peace of waking up each day with the day stretching in front of me full of limitless possibilities. Making coffee and enjoying it in the garden listening to the many birds for who’s survival skills (remember those pesky cats?!) I am most grateful.
I can barely wait for beach days. I love walking on the beach, hoping to discover a treasure left by the sea. Playing in the ocean has never lost it’s fun for me, body surfing is well worth being brave enough to venture into our freezing waves. I have a favorite beach in Cape Breton where the water isn’t icy and I can float forever and watch eagles soar above the beach. There are days when I see seals playing in the distance and pods of whales spend August off that coast.
I collect beach glass, sea glass depending where you live. I can spend hours walking on the best beach glass beach I know, collecting sea gems. I leave my sandals in the beach grass and paddle and dream as I collect. I don’t even have to look. It is always waiting for me. I suspect making beach glass so beautiful is nature’s way of encouraging us to recycle.
I have baskets of sea glass each piece treasured for the pleasure I found as I walked a beach picking up my gifts from the sea. Shells and sea glass are summer holiday surprises.
In Nova Scotia the summer is so short and the sun is so elusive that I can’t imagine spending any time in the house. When I’m feeling lazy my hammock and a book are always inviting. When I’m not, I am fortunate enough to live in an area with wooded parks and trails.
When the sun sets I light candles in my garden and watch the bats play tag. Sighting a falling star and trying to make a wish before it has disappeared is always fun. Lying in the grass during a meteor shower is almost as much fun as catching fireflies!
I’m counting the days, waiting in anticipation, excited about the possibilities this summer will bring. I am waiting for my freckles.
