September Update

I am spending much too much time on Facebook and too little time writing here. To think I stated a couple of weeks ago, I couldn’t visualize using Facebook very much. Ha! What did I know? I didn’t realise how “helpful” and entertaining a social utility program could turn out to be.

Through Facebook I’ve reconnected with a number of friends with whom I had fallen out of touch. All of us are busy with careers and often parenting and always seem to be caught up in something we should be doing. This leaves minimal room for hanging out with each other. I have also connected with some of the young women with whom I worked earlier in my career, prior to teaching. These young women are “all grown up” with families and careers of their own. It is wonderful to be in touch with them and hear news of their current lives.

Many of the friends I have caught up with are teachers. The last six years has meant five different schools. I’ve met some wonderful people through these transitions.

Happily, I saw two of them on Thursday last week at a workshop I attended. It was rather like a grad school reunion for me. There were four or five people with whom I had attended grad school and another two with whom I had worked and would love to work with again in the future. The seven of us really enjoyed the workshop, both for its content and for the opportunity to catch up with each other.

We are only three weeks into the school year and, not just me, but most of my colleagues feel like we’ve been back at school for “a while”. It’s a good year though. I’m very happy to back at my school, in my familiar classroom space, with “my” students.

Oh, and one more thing Facebook has going in its favour. “Scrabulous”, a Scrabble program. I’ve got five games going at the moment and it is fun. Now I can play the game without having to set aside time to plan a game night. Yes, I miss out on the good natured competitive banter which happens when one’s opponent is at a loss for a word, but, at least I am playing one of my favorite games.

All in all, it has been a good September for me. One where there is a sense of a new beginning as is often associated with September and back to school.
