Priorities versus Urgencies

I believe there are times when each of us may benefit from a reminder to not allow “life to get in the way”. By this I mean we need to remember the priorities vs. the urgencies in life. I suppose you’d like an explanation of the differences.

Priority: n.,pl. -ties. 1. the condition of being prior; antecedence; precedence. 2. the right of precedence over others. 3. something given specific attention: my first priority.

Urgent: adj. 1. requiring or compelling speedy action or attention: the matter is urgent. 2. earnest and persistent.

Urgencies would include our work deadlines; the filing of taxes; paying our bills when we are at risk for losing our lights or heat, really anything which is important in the flow of our day to day life. Urgencies are important, and should not to be taken lightly.

The people in our lives, whom we love, are our priorities. Insuring they know they are loved and important to us should count as a priority.

When we confuse our urgencies and our priorities we risk sending a message we may not have intended. Life is busy. We need to be vigilant.
