Music, where it takes us...

I need music. I like music. All kinds of music. Alternative, metal, pop, rock, old blues, dance, r & b, classical, the list just keeps going. I recently added the Dixie Chicks to my list.
There are times when I never listen to music, mostly because I’m not supposed to, for example, in school. There are ways around this problem. I know many of my students work better with music in the background, but I’m not supposed to let them use their mp3 players. We compromise on good days and create a play list. MusicJesus is one of their favorite resources, probably because of the videos on the site. Most of my students are visual learners.
The current play list on my ipod is an interesting mix. Dido, Sarah McLachlan, Fergie, Mary J. Blige, John Legend, The Fray, Sheryl Crow, The Black Eyed Peas, Corinne Bailey Rae, Death Cab for Cutie, The Dixie Chicks and The Pussycat Dolls.
Music has the power to make us feel, remember, imagine, dream. It can sooth us, energize us, make us sad or make us happy. Music is powerful.
When the child, who has requested I refer to her in a different manner, was a baby, I used to love our “middle of the night” time. I would put on gentle music, sometimes lullabies, and we would snuggle ‘til she fell asleep. Sometimes I’d be almost asleep myself, but reluctant to give in because the moment would be over and lost forever.
I’m like that. There are certain moments in time which I file away in my heart to be brought out on rainy days to be held close, to be treasured once more and then put back in my heart for safe keeping. Music helps me remember.
