"Lest We Forget"

It is a Saturday of a long weekend. I hesitate to describe Monday as a holiday as it only exists as a day off work due to (Sunday) November 11 being Remembrance Day in Canada. A day set aside to remember those who have given their lives to protect the rest of us during times of war.

When I was a little girl we went to school on Remembrance Day. At 11 a.m. we had two minutes of silence to show respect for those who had died. The eleventh day of the eleventh hour.

Terry Kelly, a Nova Scotian musician, has written a thought provoking song “A Pittance of Time“ and created a video to remind us of the importance of remembering why Remembrance Day exists. I remember the first time I heard it was during a Remembrance Day assembly in a junior high school. Many of the students and their families came from countries where war was a reality. These young people had often experienced significant losses. My daughter’s uncle in law had recently returned from Bosnia and had shared with me some of the memories he couldn’t lose, no matter how hard he tried. The song made a lasting impression upon me.

Whatever our individual views on war may be, we need to be grateful to the men and women who will leave their families to support and protect strangers. There are many Canadian Peace Keepers who have died in the war in Afghanistan.

Tomorrow, November 11, is a day for remembering.
